Foreign students studying in China are required to hold an ordinary passport with either an X1 visa (duration of the stay in China exceeds 180 days) or an X2 visa (duration of the stay in China within 180 days). Applicants could apply for such visas at any Chinese Embassy or Consulate near you.
Plus, you need to take and pass a physical examination if you intend to stay in China for more than 6 months.

Usually, for non-degree programs or courses selected, it will take about 2-4 weeks for the university to process the application; 4-8 weeks for degree programs/courses. An X1 visa is issued to applicants, which intend to study in China for a period exceeding 180 days (6 months).
An X2 visa is issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of no more than 180 days.
It usually takes 4 business days to complete a visa application for either the Chinese Embassy or Consulate. However, it is advised for an applicant to apply a month prior the arrival to China in case the initial application gets rejected and one needs to prepare for another interview.
Leave enough time for the application, or you can use express service (2 or 3 business days), because you do not want to miss the registration.
If necessary, the consular officer may require the applicant to provide other proofs, documents, or supplementary materials. He or she can also require an interview with the applicant.
The consular officer will decide on whether or not to issue the visa and on its validity, duration of stay and number of entries in light of specific conditions of the applicant.
